The Dunes on the Waterfront is seeking a friendly, outgoing Boat Captain and Waterfront Host to operate our guest launch along the Ogunquit River. This is one of the most unique positions on the Maine coast, combining boat operation, local storytelling, and hospitality.

Our captain helps guests travel between The Dunes and the beach, shares knowledge of the river and surrounding wildlife, and creates memorable moments along the way. Whether you're giving a quick ride across the river or taking guests on a scenic tour, you'll be part boat captain, part local ambassador, and part memory-maker.


What You'll Do

โ€ข Safely operate The Dunes Cabana Boat on the Ogunquit River

โ€ข Shuttle guests between the resort and the beach

โ€ข Offer scenic river tours and share local knowledge, history, and points of interest

Job Summary:

The Boat Captain position at The Dunes on the Waterfront primarily shuttles guests from The Dunes to the Beach along with providing tours of the tidal river upon request. The position serves as the primary contact onboard the vessel and is in compliance with USCS laws and regulations. This position ensures a high level of customer service.

Some Areas of Responsibilities:

  • The captain is responsible for every aspect of the tour, voyage and vessel
  • Ensure the guests experience is excellent and supervises the load and unloading of passengers. Ensure all the guests are receiving First Class service acting as an ambassador of The Dunes on the Waterfront and always presentable and in uniform.
  • Steer and operate vessel using equipment suck as GPS, depth finders, radios and lights; have knowledge of the tides and currents that the river imposes.
  • Dock and undock vessels, sometimes navigating through tight spaces
  • Inspect boat to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and their conformity to regulations and make sure boat is properly fueled and maintained as manufacturer recommends
  • Responsible for clean-up of vessel after each tour, remove garbage, hose down vessel with fresh water, and re-stock as necessary.
  • Maintain awareness of safety rules, workplace safety and respect for the environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Completed Boat Safety course or holds/held a Merchant Marine Credential
  • Boat captain must be able to lift, push, and pull items that weigh up to 50 pounds
  • 1-3 years of previous customer service experience and boating experience
  • Ability to utilize basic technology including a GPS, Radar and Depth finder.

Safety and Security

  • Recognizes and reports potential safety hazards in water, such floating hazards, boat ramp conditions and boat hazards
  • Maintains USCG standards and has floatation devices within reach for all guests over 16 and requires all guests under 16 to wear a flotation device while on vessel
  • Understands and follows policies and procedures for the hotelโ€™s key control system and ensures others follow them.
