How much do biomechanics simulation engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for biomechanics simulation engineer in the United States is $123,399.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $92,000.00 and $146,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biomechanics Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biomechanics Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or biomedical engineering, physics, and human anatomy, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in simulation software such as ANSYS, OpenSim, or MATLAB, and experience with finite element analysis (FEA) are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and interpret complex data. These skills are crucial for developing accurate and innovative biomechanical models that advance research and improve healthcare solutions.

What is the difference between Biomechanics Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

The Biomechanics Simulation Engineer focuses on modeling biological systems and human movement, often within healthcare or sports contexts, using specialized simulation tools. In contrast, the Mechanical Design Engineer concentrates on designing mechanical components and products across various industries. While both roles require engineering backgrounds and simulation skills, their applications and work environments differ significantly.

What is a Biomechanics Simulation Engineer?

A Biomechanics Simulation Engineer is a professional who uses computational modeling and simulation techniques to study and analyze the mechanics of biological systems, such as the human body or animal movement. They work with software tools to create virtual models of bones, muscles, joints, and tissues, helping to predict and understand how these systems respond to forces and motion. Their work is crucial in fields like medical device design, rehabilitation, sports science, and ergonomics, enabling better product development and improved patient outcomes.

How does a Biomechanics Simulation Engineer typically collaborate with researchers and clinicians during a project?

Biomechanics Simulation Engineers often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including researchers and clinicians, to ensure that simulation models accurately represent biological systems. They participate in regular meetings to discuss project goals, interpret data from experiments, and adjust simulation parameters based on clinical feedback. This collaborative environment helps bridge the gap between computational modeling and real-world applications, leading to improved patient outcomes or product designs. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate based on team input are essential for success in this role.

What you will be doing
The Spine Service and the Department of Biomechanics at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join a collaborative team of clinicians and biomechanical engineers in the study of spine biomechanics with an initial emphasis on spinopelvic biomechanics and kinematics. The fellowship is focused on developing a multidisciplinary approach integrating computer simulation, robotics, 3D imaging, and clinical data. This translational research effort requires a fellow with strong technical aptitude, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in diverse teams. Mentoring of the fellow will be shared between biomechanics and spine faculty at HSS. Salary is commensurate with training and experience.
We are seeking a fellow with the following characteristics and qualifications:
