Job description

Overview

This role provides technical and people leadership for an engineering team responsible for a customdeveloped, businesscritical application that supports complex processing and serves internal and external users. The Engineering Team Lead will guide a team of skilled engineers, balancing daytoday application stability with continuous improvement and enhancement efforts. This opportunity is wellsuited for a dynamic, handson leader who brings strong engineering fundamentals, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to partner closely with business and technology stakeholders. In this role, the leader will oversee a mature platform while driving modernization initiatives, including application refactoring and cloudbased transformation, creating a meaningful opportunity to influence technical direction and longterm sustainability. This position offers a blend of ownership, visibility, and impact, allowing the Engineering Team Lead to shape how a critical system evolves while mentoring engineers and delivering reliable, highquality solutions aligned with organizational goals.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage and participate in consults with Business Stakeholders in the analysis of shortrange business requirements and recommend innovations that anticipate future impact of changing business requirements. Responsible for building a positive client relationship.
  • Monitor the technology direction of the industry and vendor applications.
  • Research and initiate change to the status quo, when necessary.
  • Responsible for vendor and product analysis and recommendations.
  • Oversee application development, support, testing efforts, technology infrastructure/project management, and other technology domains.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Build rapport within the organization. Communicate and develop a professional level of communication and cooperation.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors and professional organizations.
  • Control the activities of the teams, assign personnel to various projects and direct their activities.
  • Ensure completion of schedules. Responsible for shortterm staffing planning.
  • Implement technology consistent with Division standards and longrange plans. Ensure adherence to all Department and Technology standards and procedures, including all documentation requirements.
  • Translate requirements to assist staff in preparing detailed specifications for system enhancements and manage recommended designs based on business and technology requirements.
  • Manage and monitor project plans and remain current on activities outside the team that may impact the client environment.
  • Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management, and terminations.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards and ensure compliance with risk and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities

Oversees a team where the majority of employees are engineering individual contributors supporting a single, specialized, custombuilt application.

Supervisory / Managerial Responsibilities

Education and Experience Required
  • A combined minimum of 9 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 4 years' engineering and/or architecture experience and 3 years leadership experience
  • Handson experience leading custom application development teams
  • Strong experience with Microsoft technology stack, including:
    • .NET
    • Angular
  • Experience supporting internetfacing applications
  • Solid understanding of the system development life cycle
  • Comfort working with mathintensive or calculationdriven systems
  • Strong understanding of financial services or banking technology environments
  • Capable of managing multiple complex initiatives simultaneously
  • Proficiency with project management, word processing, and spreadsheet tools
  • Excellent problemsolving, analytical, and decisionmaking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation and stakeholder communication skills
  • Experience working closely with business stakeholders in clientfacing or highly visible systems
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage teamwork and serve as a leadership role model
  • Understanding of technical, business, and operational impacts of technology decisions
Education and Experience Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Exposure to or experience with cloud migration initiatives, particularly Azure
  • Background in investment banking, collateral management, or related financial domains
  • Proven ability to lead teams through transition periods and rebuild engagement and morale
  • Strong mentoring and leadership capabilities
  • Subject matter expertise in applications with integrated or interfacing systems
  • Good understanding of the Bank's application framework
  • Understanding of supported businesses and their terminology
  • Selfmotivated leader with the ability to motivate others
