What does an Assistant Propulsion Test Engineer do?

An Assistant Propulsion Test Engineer helps design, set up, and conduct tests on propulsion systems such as rocket engines or jet engines. They assist with preparing test stands, monitoring test procedures, collecting and analyzing data, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. This role often involves working closely with senior engineers and technicians to troubleshoot issues, maintain equipment, and contribute to the development and validation of propulsion technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Propulsion Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Propulsion Test Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, strong analytical abilities, and familiarity with propulsion systems, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with data acquisition systems, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar testing software, along with safety certifications, is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring test accuracy. These competencies ensure reliable test execution, data integrity, and the safe development of propulsion technologies.

What is the difference between Assistant Propulsion Test Engineer vs Propulsion Test Engineer?

AspectAssistant Propulsion Test EngineerPropulsion Test Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or related engineeringBachelor's or master's degree in engineering, with more experience
Work EnvironmentAssists in testing, data collection, and analysis in lab or test facilitiesLeads testing activities, oversees test procedures, and analyzes results
ResponsibilitiesSupports propulsion testing, prepares test setups, and documents findingsDesigns test plans, manages test execution, and interprets complex data

Assistant Propulsion Test Engineers typically support testing operations under supervision, focusing on data collection and setup. Propulsion Test Engineers take on more responsibility, leading tests and analyzing results independently. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but the level of experience and responsibility distinguishes them.

What are some typical challenges faced by an Assistant Propulsion Test Engineer during engine test campaigns?

Assistant Propulsion Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting unexpected anomalies during test runs, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams under tight schedules. They are responsible for preparing test setups, monitoring instrumentation, and quickly resolving issues to minimize downtime. Developing strong problem-solving skills and effective communication is essential, as the role frequently requires real-time collaboration with senior engineers, technicians, and data analysts to achieve successful test outcomes.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Manager of Propulsion to lead propulsion test development and execution for the X-BAT vehicle, powered by a fighter-class, afterburning jet engine. This role oversees propulsion test infrastructure, engine testing, subsystem validation, and flight test support activities required to mature propulsion hardware from development through operational readiness.

You will lead a team of propulsion test engineers and technicians responsible for designing, building, and operating propulsion test stands and facilities supporting engine, fuel, oil, bleed air, and TVC systems. This role requires strong technical leadership, operational awareness, hands-on involvement in testing activities, and the ability to rapidly solve complex technical problems in demanding test environments.

What you'll do:
  • Lead propulsion test planning and execution from component-level development through flight readiness.
  • Oversee the design, analysis, and construction of propulsion test stands, fixtures, instrumentation systems, and safety systems.
  • Support propulsion REs in defining test objectives, instrumentation strategies, and data analysis methodologies.
  • Guide teams through propulsion thermodynamic analysis, transient characterization, thermal performance evaluation, and operability validation.
  • Drive root cause investigations and rapid troubleshooting efforts during testing activities.
  • Coordinate test schedules, facility readiness, staffing, and supplier support.
  • Ensure propulsion testing aligns with vehicle-level milestones and program priorities.
  • Lead development of test processes, standards, and operational best practices.
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in propulsion testing or aerospace development programs.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and aerospace propulsion fundamentals.
  • Strong understanding of gas turbine engine testing, instrumentation, transient response, and propulsion system integration.
  • Hands-on experience designing or operating propulsion test stands and facilities.
  • Experience leading technical teams and coordinating complex test operations.
  • U.S. Citizenship or ability to comply with ITAR requirements.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience testing fighter-class or low-bypass turbofan propulsion systems.
  • Familiarity with Python, REFPROP, GFSSP, ANSYS, FEA, or propulsion performance analysis tools.
  • Experience with controls integration, TVC testing, transient characterization, or operability mapping.
  • Background in rocket propulsion testing or hot-fire development environments.
  • Experience operating in hardware-centric, test-driven aerospace organizations.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or related discipline.
