UCT is seeking a highly skilled Welding Lead to join our team in Chandler, AZ.

The Welding Lead provides technical expertise, daily work direction, and mentorship to Welding Technicians (Welder Iโ€“IV) while performing advanced MIG and TIG welding on complex, closeโ€‘tolerance weldments in accordance with AWS standards.

This position owns floor execution of welding operations, ensuring production efficiency, quality compliance, and workforce effectiveness while driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Oversight

  • Lead, coach, and mentor Welders (Level Iโ€“IV), providing real-time technical guidance and development
  • Assign and coordinate daily work based on production priorities, technician skill level, and weld schedules
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for technical and production issues
  • Support onboarding, training, and skill progression, including weld qualification readiness
  • Reinforce accountability for safety, quality, and accurate production execution

Production & Technical Execution

  • Perform advanced MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding on complex weldments across steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
  • Interpret complex blueprints, AWS welding symbols, and GD&T to ensure precise fabrication
  • Lead layout, fit-up, and fabrication of multi-component weldments with tight tolerances
  • Ensure weldments meet AWS codes, blueprint requirements, and internal quality standards
  • Verify proper setup and use of welding equipment in accordance with WPS

Operations, Systems & Continuous Improvement

  • Execute and support weld schedules in partnership with supervision to meet production targets
  • Utilize the labor tracking system to accurately capture job progress, time, and production activity
  • Train and enforce consistent use of labor tracking tools to ensure data accuracy and accountability
  • Monitor workflow and labor utilization to identify bottlenecks, improve efficiency, and support reporting
  • Drive first-pass yield and reduce rework through proactive quality oversight
  • Troubleshoot process, equipment, and build issues; implement corrective actions
  • Generate, track, and close production action items

Quality & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with AWS standards, internal quality requirements, and safety procedures
  • Identify defects, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures; reinforce team adherence
Basic Qualifications
  • Associateโ€™s degree (technical discipline) or equivalent experience
  • 4โ€“6+ years of MIG/TIG welding experience in a manufacturing environment (closeโ€‘tolerance weldments)
  • 1โ€“2+ years of leadership experience (lead, trainer, or senior-level welder)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting or leading Welders across multiple levels (Iโ€“III/IV scope)
  • Strong knowledge of AWS codes, weld symbols, and GD&T
  • Experience with complex frame weldments and multi-material fabrication (steel, stainless, aluminum)
  • Familiarity with labor tracking, MES, or ERP systems in a manufacturing environment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving in welding and fabrication
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and work instructions
  • Effective communication and leadership skills across all levels of the organization
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to train others on processes, tools, and systems
  • Proficiency with welding equipment, hand tools, and grinders
  • Intermediate computer skills
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work performed in a manufacturing and/or cleanroom environment
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks including bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (more with assistance)
  • Required to wear appropriate PPE
  • Exposure to mechanical equipment, noise, and temperature variations
