Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele/PCU Float Pool position at an acute care hospital in Arizona, requiring at least 2 years of experience and the ability to float across multiple units and campuses.

Details
  • Float pool assignment covering MedSurg Tele and PCU units across two campuses, including inpatients holding in the ED
  • West Campus Stepdown unit has 14 rooms (double occupancy) with an average census of 20; West MedSurg Tele has 95 beds divided into 4 areas organized in 10-room pods (double occupancy)
  • East Campus is a smaller, similar setup with ICU and stepdown patients in a 10-bed double-occupancy unit
  • Patient population includes geriatric patients, ortho patients, post-procedural cardiac patients (post-MI, post-cardiac cath, CABG post-op day 3–4), and patients requiring groin site care in stepdown
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: PCU 1:4, MedSurg Tele 1:5–6
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Insulin
  • Respiratory equipment includes CPAP/BiPAP at night in MedSurg; BiPAP, CPAP, and heated high-flow oxygen in PCU
  • Monitor techs cover PCU and MedSurg Tele; RNs must be able to independently interpret cardiac rhythm strips
  • Charting is done in Cerner
  • 12-hour shifts, 7a–7p (days)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Travelers are included in the permanent staff holiday rotation
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • Unit assignments are communicated by text message from the staffing office approximately 2 hours prior to shift start
  • The two campuses are approximately 20–25 minutes apart; travelers must be flexible with unit assignments across both locations
Requirements
  • Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses are not accepted
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required, with at least 1 year in a PCU setting
  • Proficiency with telemetry interpretation and titrating drips (Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Insulin)
  • Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) with a score of at least 80% within two attempts prior to offer confirmation
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
Additional Information
  • Provide float pool nursing care across MedSurg Tele and PCU units, adapting to varying patient acuity and unit environments
  • Nurse aides are available across all settings
  • Each unit has a dedicated charge nurse who does not take a patient assignment
  • Orientation consists of an 8-hour general hospital orientation day, followed by a 12-hour shift on West MedSurg Tele and a 12-hour shift on West PCU; East Campus orientation is similar in structure
  • A pass/fail sterile technique test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation
  • Scheduling is managed by a float pool scheduler and is published 6 weeks out in 4-week blocks; travelers must remain flexible; night shift may accommodate block scheduling requests
  • Scrub color is currently solid professional colors; transitioning to navy scrubs in October in alignment with Dignity Health guidelines
  • Travelers are expected to secure housing that supports timely response across both campuses given the float pool nature of the role
