Job description

Amalgamated Sugar Company is seeking a strategic and experienced Director of Safety to serve as a key member of our leadership team in Boise, Idaho. In this critical role, you will lead all aspects of the company's safety and security programs across our manufacturing facilities and warehouse operations. You will partner with cross-functional teams to develop and implement initiatives that ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while fostering a strong, proactive safety culture throughout the organization. This position requires up to 50% travel between sites and reports to the General Counsel.
We are looking for a collaborative safety leader with 15 years of experience in industrial manufacturing and at least 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building and directing effective safety programs, guiding district-level safety teams, managing workers' compensation and loss prevention efforts, and serving as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies such as OSHA, DOT, and ATF. A bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or a related field is required, and professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, SMS, or OHST are strongly preferred. Strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems are essential.
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as key strategic leader on Company senior leadership group responsible for all safety matters and related compliance. Partner with and lead cross-functional teams to pursue Company initiatives.
  • Directs the development and direction of Company-wide safety and security programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations. Reviews new or revised regulations and provides site guidance to ensure compliance. Must be willing to travel between sites up to 50% of the time.
  • Provides safety resources to the Company's and National Sugar Marketing's (NSM) outside Warehouse operations.
  • Guide District Safety Managers to develop consistent policies and procedures for site specific safety and security programs, ensuring site compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Guide and manage the Loss Claims Specialist in the oversight of workers' compensation cases, return to work programs and loss claim matters.
  • Act as the company liaison to OSHA, NESHAPS, DOT, ATF and other regulatory agencies.
  • Act as a site representative to insurance carrier engineers.
  • Provides guidance for effective security systems which will include compliance with all applicable security regulations. Works with the Quality Assurance Team on matters of food security systems.
  • Prioritizes safety projects and develops strategic plans in collaboration with corporate and factory personnel.
  • Works with regulatory agencies as necessary to address compliance and licensing.
  • Evaluates safety capital and operating budgets for each facility and provides recommendations on capital expenditures.
  • Develop corporate and district safety operating budgets.
  • Works with direct reports to identify needed consultants to ensure compliance with all safety and security regulations.
  • Report to General Counsel on areas of potential exposure to liability in relationship to applicable laws, regulations, permitting and compliance programs.
  • Leads, manages, and mentors the district Safety Managers for department personnel under their responsibility

    • Performance management: develop goals, provide coaching & measure performance
Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, Engineering or related field.
  • 15 plus years' experience in industrial manufacturing and 3-5+ years Leadership experience
  • Previous experience as Safety / EH&S manager, similar role, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Safety Accreditation preferred. (ie: ASP, CSP, SMS, OHST)
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
  • Working knowledge of computer use and computerized maintenance management systems (MS Office, Outlook)
