Job description

Through dynamic and innovative approaches, Student Life is a robust program that provides students with opportunities for meaningful engagement and transformation in the co-curricular context. The Director of Accessibility Services develops and provides direct services to students identifying as having a disability. The Director will collaborate with multiple areas, including Academic Affairs, to create a supportive environment that promotes student wellness and success and to ensure that students with disabilities are on the path to success at MHU.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The job is sedentary in nature
  • TRAVEL/TIME REQUIREMENTS:
  • A 28hour workweek is normal
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Higher Education, Public Health, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in disability services, student support services, or related field
  • Strong knowledge of disability laws, regulations, and best practices (e.g., ADA, Section 504)
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion, including knowledge of confidentiality guidelines (i.e., FERPA/HIPAA)
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to learn new computer systems
  • Excellent people skills and comfort working with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds in an accepting, open, and nonjudgmental way
  • Excellent communication skills through multiple modalities, with experience managing crises and managing communication with multiple offices, individuals, and with emergency services; facilitate training or workshops for students, faculty, and staff
  • Knowledge of higher education systems, student development theory, and student success initiatives, with an understanding of the unique challenges faced by students
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, collect and analyze data, and assess program outcomes
  • Ability to work congruently within the mission and values of Mars Hill University
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Evaluate disability documentation and determine appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities in accordance with legal requirements (ADA, Section 504, etc.)
  • Serve as the primary contact for individuals seeking accommodations, providing guidance on the process, eligibility, and available resources; meet with students to assess their needs and discuss appropriate accommodations
  • Act as an advocate for students with disabilities, working to address barriers to access and success; develop a strong collaboration with offices across campus
  • Maintain confidential records related to disability services and accommodations, in compliance with privacy laws and organizational policies.
  • Stay informed about developments in accessibility/disability services, laws, and best practices to continuously improve services and support; participate in appropriate professional development/training
  • Support Admissions in recruitmentrelated efforts
  • Manage budgets for Accessibility Services Office
  • Revise and update all disability forms, brochures, and policies as needed to comply with the most recent ADA rulings
  • Assist Center for Student Success with connecting students to resources; serve on the Student Care team
  • Consult with faculty, staff, residential life staff, and students as appropriate, concerning disability accommodations
  • Maintain accurate, uptodate records in accordance with professional, ethical, and legal standards, utilizing university systems (LionTrax, PIVOT, Shared Drive, etc.)
  • Adhere to guidelines in the University Personnel & Safety Handbooks and departmental policies
  • Other duties as assigned
