What Is a Training Specialist?

Training specialists are human resources professionals who design and implement professional development programs to improve employee performance. As a training specialist, your job duties include running orientation classes for new staff members, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of employees, and leading employee training and continuing education sessions. You also monitor employee performance over a period of time to evaluate retention of new policies and techniques taught in training sessions. Because training specialists need to communicate well to a room full of people, excellent communication skills are required for this position.

How to Become a Training Specialist

To become a training specialist, you need a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, adult education and training, or a related industry. Acquire an entry-level position in a Human Resources department to gain experience in the field. Once you have several years of experience, you are eligible for training specialist positions. Some employers prefer candidates with certification from human resources organizations, such as the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance credential from the Association for Talent Development.
