What Is a Technician Job?

A technician is a skilled worker who specializes in a particular field and performs complex technical tasks. Common technician jobs include automotive service technician, pharmacy technician, maintenance technician, systems technician, psychiatric technician, and dental technician. Your job duties as a technician vary depending on the field in which you specialize. For example, as a service technician, you perform mechanical repairs. As a pharmacy technician, you use equipment to mix, count, and dispense prescription medications. As a medical technician, your responsibilities involve testing patient samples to help physicians diagnose illnesses.

What Certification Is Needed for a Technician Job?

Although some technician jobs require only a high school diploma or GED certificate, many positions require you to complete some postsecondary education or training, including professional certification. To pursue technician qualifications, you typically need to complete a certification course or an associate degree in your field. Then you must pass a certification exam to earn your industry-specific technician certification. Industry certification boards oversee these examinations. For example, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) handles certification of pharmacy techs and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifies automotive service technicians.
