What Is a Mold Technician and How to Become One

Table of Contents

What Does a Mold Technician Do?

A mold technician, also referred to as a machine operator or tender, uses manufacturing equipment to shape metal or plastic components for products. Your duties as a mold technician are to operate, calibrate, and maintain machinery, as well as inspect finished products to ensure quality work. You must be comfortable working in high-heat environments and performing physical labor, such as lifting up to 50 pounds and working on your feet. There are no formal qualifications for a career as a mold technician since your employer provides on-the-job training. However, obtaining an associate degree or higher in machine operations or materials production helps you gain experience and learn job skills.

How to Become a Mold Technician

A mold technician career generally requires experience and a high school diploma or a GED certificate rather than a formal degree. Some entry-level positions exist to teach you your job duties and enhance your skills, but some employers look for candidates with a technical program certification or prior job experience. Additional qualifications include having an excellent understanding of how to operate equipment safely and effectively. You also need skills with a variety of tools and the ability to read and understand blueprints and other technical documentation. A willingness to be a team player is a must for this job.
