What Is a Housing Specialist?

A housing specialist works in a government social services office and helps clients find affordable housing. Clients may include low- to moderate-income families, veterans, the homeless, disabled, or senior citizens. Many of these clients may be on government-assistance programs or are transitioning from temporary to permanent housing. As a housing specialist, your responsibilities involve interviewing housing applicants, contacting housing agents, and monitoring a client’s progress. You may also prepare instructional materials on financial issues such as rent payment and budget management. To pursue a career as a housing specialist, you need to complete a training course to earn certification. Some employers prefer candidates with experience in social work or with a government agency. Knowledge of all local, state, and federal housing laws and regulations is also required.

How to Become a Housing Specialist

The main qualifications for getting a job as a housing specialist are a bachelor's degree in a related field and at least one year of relevant industry experience. Some employers accept additional work experience in place of higher education, so it is possible to become a housing specialist with as little as a high school diploma. That said, the bachelor's degree can help you qualify for more positions, so consider continuing your education to this point if you want to maximize your career opportunities. Other helpful qualities for getting a job in this field include research skills, the ability to travel, and the ability to memorize and understand complex regulations governing housing issues.
