What Does an HVAC Service Technician Do?

An HVAC service technician installs, tests, and repairs heating and air conditioning systems. “HVAC” is an acronym for “heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.” Technicians have the qualifications and skills to install and service various systems, and test ventilation and air quality systems after installation. They work in residential homes, office buildings, factories, and on new construction projects. Many are self-employed or run their own companies. Some states require HVAC service technicians to be licensed by the state.

How to Become an HVAC Service Technician

It takes several months of coursework to become an HVAC service technician. An aspiring technician will need to enroll in a technical school or community college for programs ranging in length from 6-months to 2-years. Technicians start as apprentices after completing their education. This introduces them to the job through hands-on training. If the technician is working with air conditioning or systems which use refrigerants, the EPA requires certification for proper handling. Your coursework should include preparation for the EPA mandated exam.
