What Is a Culinary Specialist?
A culinary specialist works in the United States military to operate and manage dining facilities, often in the Navy or Coast Guard. As a culinary specialist, you provide catering and hospitality services for a range of people, from fellow crew members to admirals, executives, and the President. Job duties include cooking and cleaning, preparing menus, ordering food items, sanitizing materials, and operating kitchen facilities and dining areas. Often working in close quarters with a team, you need customer service skills and cooking experience. You must join a branch of the military for this career. Qualifications include attending culinary school, and additional training is provided on-the-job.
How to Become a Culinary Specialist
The primary qualifications for getting a job as a culinary specialist include achieving an 85 aptitude score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test's operators and food section. You also need to complete the specified training for your branch of the military. Previous experience in a food preparation role may also qualify you for this job. However, this may be judged on a case-by-case basis if you do not start your career in the military. Like most military roles, being a culinary specialist requires some skills not needed for civilian equivalents, such as the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
