What Does a Commercial Property Manager Do?

Commercial property is real estate designated for shopping malls, hotels, and other businesses created to generate revenue. A commercial property manager oversees these properties to make sure that they are filled with quality tenants that add value to the property and facilitates repairs or other issues the tenants may have in the building. Duties of a commercial property manager include meeting with potential clients and tenants, collecting rent from each tenant, hiring contractors to service the property, and building professional partnerships through real estate associations.

How to Become a Commercial Property Manager

There are no education requirements to become a commercial property manager, but earning a bachelor’s degree in real estate management, finance, business administration, or a related field may make you a more valuable candidate in the job market. Acquire a position as a real estate assistant to learn about marketing and listing commercial properties. Practice using Yardi and other property management software to organize listings. Pursue the CPM, AcOM, or a similar real estate certification through the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) to increase your career prospects. Cultivate relationships with realtors and contractors to find available positions for commercial property managers.
